Biden to meet Turnbull during Australian cancer research trip

The White House has confirmed US Vice-President Joe Biden will visit Australia this weekend, and will meet with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

Mr Biden will travel to Melbourne this weekend, where he will the visit the Victorian Comprehensive Cancer Centre to promote US-Australia cancer research cooperation.

The Vice President is closely involved with several global cancer research projects, after his 46-year-old son Beau died of brain cancer last year.

While in Melbourne, Mr Biden will also visit Boeing’s factory to witness Victoria’s contribution to the Boeing 787 Dreamliner project.

“Victoria and the United States collaborate strongly across aerospace, medical research and information technology and this visit will help strengthen those ties for the years ahead,” Victoria’s Acting Premier James Merlino said in a statement.

It is also understood Mr Biden will attend the AFL game between Carlton and West Coast at the MCG on Sunday.

On Monday, Mr Biden will meet with Mr Turnbull in Sydney.

He will also meet Australian troops, host a roundtable discussion with Australian and American business leaders, and give a speech on the US-Australia relationship.
