A security guard has died in Gympie Hospital, north of Brisbane, shortly after he tried to restrain a mental health patient.
The 46-year-old man died after the incident, which occurred in the hospital’s emergency department about 11:30am on Sunday.
A Queensland Police Service spokesman said investigations were underway and that there was no suggestion at this stage that the guard was assaulted.
Investigators said he may have suffered a heart attack.
In a written statement, Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service chief executive Kevin Hegarty expressed his condolences to the man’s family.
“We are providing support to family members and co-workers,” he said.
“No other statement will be made at this time.”
