A young refugee and her newborn baby have been flown to an Australian hospital after what’s believed to have been birth complications on Nauru.

It’s understood the baby was born premature and the mother is seriously ill.

Mother and baby were admitted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital on Friday morning.

Refugee Action Coalition spokesman Ian Rintoul said they had been airlifted in separate planes and were both in critical conditions when they left Nauru.

The RAC named the woman as 22-year-old Somali refugee Naima and said she and her son were evacuated in “emergency circumstances” on Thursday night after a caesarean in the afternoon.

“This emergency medical evacuation raises even more questions about the standard of health care on Nauru,” Mr Rintoul said, in a statement.

“The Minister needs to come clean on the real standards of the Nauru hospital.”

The baby was born one month premature, according to the RAC.

A Department of Immigration and Border Protection spokesman confirmed the refugee and baby had been flown to Australia and were receiving “appropriate medical treatment” but refused to comment further.
