A Newcastle doctor has been charged with sexually and indecently assaulting six of his female patients during consultations over nearly 10 years.

The 63-year-old doctor was arrested on Thursday morning and taken to Newcastle police station, where he was charged with two counts of sexual assault, four counts of indecent assault and committing an act of indecency.

Police will allege in court that the doctor, who worked at a specialist clinic on Watt Street, sexually and indecently assaulted the female patients during consultations between 2003 and 2012.

One of those women also had an act of indecency performed on her, police allege.

The women, who are aged between 24 and 55, reported the alleged assaults to police, who formed Strike Force Yatala to investigate the allegations.

Detectives executed a search warrant at the clinic on March 2 and seized a computer and a number of documents.

The doctor was granted conditional bail, and is due to appear in Newcastle Local Court on April 7.

Police said the investigation was continuing, and anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
