There are ways to combat the ill-effects of flying.

WHETHER it’s a long haul or short haul flight, there’s no denying that being crammed into a small space with hundreds of other passengers has an effect on our health.

Side effects such as dehydration, bloating or jet lag impact how we feel when we arrive at our destination, often taking days for you to have a full recovery.

However there are some steps you can take to combat the ill effects of flying. The team at Fix.com pulled together the best tips and tricks to make your next flight more enjoyable. Here’s some of the best:

• Drink at least eight glasses of water a day in the days leading up to your flight

• Bring a refillable water bottle to the airport that you can top up after you’ve passed through security and when on the plane

• Avoid fizzy drinks and instead try probiotic drinks such as kombucha

• Instead of a burger and fries that will leave you feeling bloated opt for raw foods such as carrot or celery sticks, lean grilled meats and yoghurt.

Ditch fizzy drinks and try Kombucha instead.

• Avoid alcohol and food high in fat and salt that can cause dehydration and slow down digestion

• Instead of chewing gum, chew a ginger sweet

Try some natural remedies for travel ailments including:

• cinnamon and cardamom for digestion

• melatonin supplement and camomile tea to help with sleep

• echinacea for immune support

• vitamin C to help the body build immunity to new germs

• Fibre to help the body naturally break down food

Fix.com also suggest wearing compression socks to help combat deep vein thrombosis and considering staying at an airport hotel if you have an early morning flight to get some extra hours of sleep.

Once you’ve landed at your destination, you can still help your recovery by:

• Getting back to normal mealtimes as quickly as possible

• Exposing yourself to plenty of sunlight to help beat the effects of jet lag

• Exercise to help restore the body’s circulation and make sure the body knows its daytime not bedtime

Avoid alcohol and you’ll sleep better and feel less bloated.
