THE long-promised South Australian Mental Health Commission has been officially established, with the appointment of an interim commissioner.
DR Stephen Christley, an experienced clinician and health executive who was previously SA’s chief public health officer, was on Thursday appointed as the state’s interim mental health commissioner.
The commission was promised by Labor during last year’s state election, with $9 million over four years allocated in the budget. Health Minister Jack Snelling said the commission will lead the development of the next state mental health plan and develop policy to improve mental health service delivery. “And most importantly it will work closely with the mental health sector and the community,” he told state parliament on Thursday. “Mental health problems and mental illness are among the greatest causes of disability, diminished life and reduced productivity in our society.” A search is underway for a permanent mental health commissioner and Dr Christley will act in the role until an appointment is made. “I encourage anyone who has an interest in leading such an important area in our State to apply,” Mr Snelling said.
