TASMANIANS will learn today what the State Government’s new plan is for addressing mental health.

Health Minister Michael Ferguson will this morning in Launceston launch the plan, a key plank of the government’s election commitment.

The “Rethink Mental Health Project” involved the Mental Health Council of Tasmania working with the Mental Health, Alcohol and Drug Directorate as well as other stakeholders.

“The commitment was to develop an integrated Tasmanian mental health system that provided support in the right place, at the right time and with clear signposts about where and how to get help,” a June review of the project said.

“The focus is on achieving better outcomes for consumers, their families and carers from existing mental health expenditure and directing resources onto frontline services and support.

“The Rethink Mental Health Project will deliver a long-term plan for mental health in Tasmania that guides investment into the next decade, establishes priorities and identifies strategies to enable changes to be realised. The Plan will be released in October 2015.”
