A young woman has died from meningococcal disease in a hospital on the New South Wales mid-north coast.

It is the second death in the Hunter New England Health region in as many days, but health officials say the cases are not linked.

An elderly woman died in a Hunter hospital from meningococcal yesterday.

It is the sixth case of the disease in the health district so far this year.

There were 11 cases in the region in 2014.

Hunter New England Health said up to 10 per cent of patients with invasive meningococcal disease in Australia die as a result of the infection.
