Cairns Hospital Board chair Bob Norman has quit amid pressure from unions and the Health Minister to fix the plagued Cairns Hospital emergency department.
Mr Norman has been chair of the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital Health Board for more than three years and resigned today despite his contract coming up for review in May next year.
“I had wished to continue in the board chair role for a further term but it is obvious from the events of the last few days that this outcome is extremely unlikely,” Mr Norman said.
“I have put my heart and soul into the board chair role… I will not be retiring from business or public life in our great region.”
He said he was disappointed in the failure of successive governments to abolish a ‘transition funding’ structure which cost the local health service $21 million in the past financial year.
