A BRISBANE university is facing a measles outbreak after a third person was infected with the virus this month.

Queensland Health issued a measles warning last Tuesday when it was revealed a student at the University of Queensland had contracted the virus.

The person went to the University of Queensland’s St Lucia campus for lectures with the UQ Faculty of Business on July 29, July 31 and August 3 before heading to a pub and catching public transport.

Queensland Health today was forced to reissue the warning after two further cases were reported at the university.

The Metro North Public Health Unit urged anyone not vaccinated against measles to visit their doctor.

“Vaccination now will not prevent infection from any possible exposure to the three UQ cases, but will provide protection if there are more cases,” Public Health Physician Dr James Smith said.

“If you suspect that you may be developing measles, please stay away from the university and seek medical attention as soon as possible.

“Notify your doctor of the possibility of measles prior to arriving for your appointment.”

The first individual also went to Indooroopilly Shopping Town, South Bank, the Fox Hotel, and the university’s pharmacy and medical centre between July 28 and August 4.

Anyone seeking information can contact the health unit on 3624 1111 or call 13 HEALTH.
