Medical research to help babies will receive a major boost when a Brisbane home bequeathed to the Mater Foundation goes up for auction next month.

The deceased home owner, who wished to remain anonymous, decided to donate the house and its goods to baby medical research at the Mater Foundation.

The Coorparoo property has been entrusted with Harcourts Inner East agents John McLeod and Annie Abra.

Ms Abra said the owner did not have any family at the time she passed away and thought very carefully about her decision to donate the property.

“She was very specific about donating to baby research at the Mater Foundation,” Ms Abra said.

“It is for a good cause and raises awareness for people who may not know that they can bequeath their property,” she said.

“I believe the reason she chose the Mater Foundation is due to the fact she could specifically choose an area to donate to, that being: baby research.”

Ms Abra said bequeathing was quite common however it was not often discussed publicly.

“We have had people donate in the past and even specifically to the Mater Foundation,” she said.

“People who are passionate about certain things often donate their estate, yet a lot of people still don’t consider it.”

Ms Abra said so far there was no reserve, but she hoped for the best possible price.

“It should fall into the first home-buyers budget,” she said.

Mr McLeod said the home included some antiques that would also be auctioned.

“We will be auctioning this terrific original home at 11am on Saturday 1 August followed by a goods and chattels auction comprising the entire contents of the home including some antiques,” said Mr McLeod.

Mater Foundation chief executive officer Nigel Harris said the donation would make a profound difference to the wider Queensland community.

“This house has the power to help fund breakthrough life-saving medical research,” Mr Harris said.

“This wouldn’t be possible without the gift of a bequest.

“The generous donor who owned the property wanted to ensure that the gift of her home to Mater would benefit future generations to come.”

The 41 Capella Street house in Coorparoo will be open for inspection on Saturdays until auction day on August 1.

Mater Foundation is focused on supporting clinical programs, education and training, research and mission activities at Mater Hospitals.
