Health Minister Sussan Ley insists savings will need to be found elsewhere before the federal government scraps its plan to charge a $5 co-payment for prescription drugs.

The measure was included in the May budget but has been the subject of confusion since Ms Ley said she wouldn’t put the measure into the Senate because she knew the crossbench wouldn’t support it.

She assured a parliamentary committee on Monday that the measure did not have the support of the crossbench but would remain on the table until equivalent savings were found elsewhere
