MERS death toll hits 16 in South Korea as WHO calls emergency meeting
Two more MERS-related deaths have been reported in South Korea, bringing the total to 16 and prompting the World Health Organization (WHO) to call an emergency meeting for June 16.

According to the Nikkei Asian Review, the latest death was a 62-year-old man in Busan who died Sunday while being treated. The total number of reported cases of MERS in South Korea now stands at 150 with thousands more under quarantine.

South Korean officials and WHO representatives say that the virus hasn’t spread outside of certain health facilities in South Korea. Meanwhile, the WHO is planning an emergency meeting on June 16 to address the latest outbreak and maintained in a news release that “continued monitoring for this is critical.”
The meeting comes as a potential case has been reported in Slovokia. Doctors are awaiting test results for a 38-year-old South Korean, who may have been exposed to the virus while working as a subcontractor at a plant for Korean automotive company Kia in Zilina, Slovakia.
