There is a call for a specialist palliative care doctor, to be based in Dubbo.

Members from Push for Palliative say it is not acceptable, there are only two specialist palliative care nurses in the western region.

“They have to look after people in the outlying towns, and quite long distances out and it’s just not enough, and they’re just not able to do what’s needed,” group member, Dr Yvonne McMaster said.

Dr McMaster, says she has written to the state’s Health Minister, Jillian Skinner, outlining the urgent need for more resources to help support dying people.

She says she she will speak with Member for Dubbo, Troy Grant, during a meeting in the city today about what support is needed locally.

“A specialist doctor for Dubbo, specifically who will consult for people who have severe problems to do with advanced diseases, like heart disease cancer, kidney failure, that sort of thing,” she said.

“We need a specialist doctor and we need more nurses.”

This week is National Palliative Care week.
