A doctor who was sacked by Queensland Health has launched an appeal to be reinstated.

Dr Peter Wirth worked as a senior medical officer at the Mackay Base Hospital emergency department in the state’s north.

He was dismissed in January this year after ongoing complaints from colleagues and an independent investigation.

Dr Wirth has applied to the Queensland Industrial Relations Commission to be reinstated and for orders to be made against the Mackay Hospital and Health Service.

Lawyers for the health service argued Dr Wirth had routinely ignored nurses, a claim he denied.

The court was also told one nurse became frightened and upset after Dr Wirth joked about giving her mobile number to a patient with an extensive history of violence.

He admitted he should not have made the joke and apologised several times.

Lawyers for Dr Wirth told the commission, the termination was a gross denial of natural justice.

The commission heard, Dr Wirth himself made complaints that we was being bullied and harassed but they were never acted upon.

A lawyer for Dr Wirth said some of the accusations of misconduct against Dr Wirth never happened and any inappropriate conduct was not serious and did not justify termination.

The hearing is continuing.
