Pharmacists and the federal government are close to striking a deal on a new agreement to dispense taxpayer-funded medicines.

The government has put a near $19 billion offer on the table in return for pharmacists reaching new performance measures that include making medicines cheaper for consumers.

After months of robust negotiations, Health Minister Sussan Ley on Monday told ABC radio she wants to introduce legislation for the new arrangements to parliament in the last week of May.
