Ever since Taylor Swift joined Tumblr, she has used the platform as a way to connect with fans.

On Thursday, she used it to share somber personal news.

In a heartfelt post, Swift let fans know that her mother, Andrea, was recently diagnosed with cancer.

Swift wrote that she had asked her mom to get screened as a precaution, even though nothing seemed wrong — and that she recently received the devastating diagnosis.

The family intends to keep the details of the illness private, but Swift’s mom told her to share the news with her fans in the hopes that it would encourage others to make sure their loved ones get checked for any illnesses as soon as possible.

“She wanted you to know because your parents may be too busy juggling everything they’ve got going on to go to the doctor, and maybe you reminding them to go get checked for cancer could possibly lead to an early diagnosis and an easier battle,” Swift wrote. “Or peace of mind in knowing that they’re healthy and there’s nothing to worry about. She wanted you to know why she may not be at as many shows this tour. She’s got an important battle to fight.”

Swift has frequently spoken about her close relationship with her family. Her song “The Best Day” on the 2008 album Fearless was written for them.
