MORE than 50 Victorian operating theatres and 1400 hospital beds sit empty, a review has found.
FORMER Australian Medical Association Victoria president Doug Travis said his interim review of Victorian hospitals also showed 53 operating theatres were not being used.
Dr Travis said 86 public health services were surveyed and 34 metropolitan, regional and rural hospitals were visited. “The majority of hospital beds not in use are at major metropolitan health services – 1001 beds out of 1436 beds,” he said on Wednesday. The state government has committed $200 million to open operating theatres and fill unused beds.
