A four-week-old baby has died in Perth of whooping cough, authorities say.

The Princess Margaret Hospital confirmed a young child who was a patient at the hospital died of whooping cough.

A Health Department spokesperson said the baby boy died on Tuesday.

The department confirmed it was the first whooping cough death in Western Australia since 2011.

From 2008 to 2011 there was one whooping cough death recorded per year.

Whooping cough, also known as pertussis, is an infection of the respiratory tract.

The infection is particularly serious in infants under six months old who are too young to be fully vaccinated.

More to come.
