NEWS of the departure of former Queensland Health director-general Ian Maynard appears to have been broken to staff via an email from his replacement – hours before he sent a missive of his own.

The Courier-Mail has previously reported that Health Minister Cameron Dick asked the department why Mr Maynard ignored internal processes when he sent his “thank you” email to staff on February 26.

PARTING ACT: Why Minister was upset

But it appears Mr Maynard’s email was not the first received by Queensland Health staff that morning, with acting director-general Michael Cleary sending out a message, with the subject “welcome to our new minister”, about 8.30am.

Mr Maynard’s email hit inboxes shortly after 11am.

After writing about Mr Dick assuming his new role, Dr Cleary wrote: “I would also like to acknowledge Ian Maynard, who has recently departed Queensland Health. I will be acting as the Director-General of Health following Ian’s departure.”

More than two hours later, Mr Maynard told staff: “As you may be aware, I will be leaving Queensland Health in the near future. Over the past 18 months, I have had the privilege of leading Queensland Health as your Director-General.”

Mr Maynard also wishes Mr Dick and Dr Cleary “all the best”.

While Mr Maynard’s email was headed with a banner featuring a smiling headshot and the title “Director-General”, Dr Cleary’s earlier email also included a smiling picture and the title “A/Director-General”.
