FOLLOWING the big wet that has lashed south east Queensland over the last week, Lord Mayor Graham Quirk has outlined a plan to reduce the effect of mosquitoes that are flourishing in the rain sodden areas of Brisbane.

By the end of today, council expects to spray 2000 hectares of known mosquito breeding ground.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said that the high tides and wet weather have allowed the mosquitoes to thrive over the last week.

Council plans to respond with both aerial and ground sprays that will manage the population.

They will target specific areas where breeding and egg laying occurs, it is designed to disrupt the life cycle by now allowing larvae to mature any further.

Council say it will reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases spreading.
