Polhemus Microsensor 1.8 Offers Highly Precise Motion Tracking in Tiny Package (VIDEOS)

Polhemus (Colchester, VT) has unveiled its new motion tracking Micro Sensor 1.8 device that, as the name implies, is 1.8 mm in diameter – thin enough for use in minimally invasive vascular surgery. It monitors its movement in 3D using electromagnetic techniques, providing real time position and orientation information on a computer screen.

The sensor is not a medical device itself, but can be used in conjunction with other systems to help provide navigation capabilities inside the body and monitor the motion of muscles, joints, and other moving parts of the body.

The lightweight sensor provides telemetry at up to 240 updates per second. Multiple identical sensors can be placed in close proximity to each other while simultaneously providing position and orientation data.
