When Apple started developing its smartwatch, executives envisioned a state-of-the-art health-monitoring device that could measure numerous health levels, but none of those technologies made it into the much-anticipated Apple Watch, due in April. Daisuke Wakabayashi joins MoneyBeat.

LEAKED details about the Apple Watch reveal the technology giant’s ambitious plan to quickly dominate the burgeoning smartwatch market.

The Wall Street Journal today has published a report that Apple has ordered five to six million Apple Watches to be ready to ship when the product goes on sale in April.

Apple, as usual, hasn’t commented and the Wall Street Journal quotes “people familiar with the matter” in the report that says that half of that initial production run will be the Apple Watch Sport model.

The top-end 18-karat gold Apple Watch Edition, which is tipped to be the company’s dearest product ever, will reportedly only be a small slice of that initial order. It’s estimated that one million a month of the luxe version will be shipped by the second quarter.

If sales of the Apple Watch match the predictions, it would be on track to meet the popularity of the iPad, which sold 7.5 million units in the first six months.

It would also put Apple in the number one spot in the smartwatch market. A recent Canalys report found that only 720,000 Android Wear watches shipped last year.
