A Canberra doctor has been reprimanded for not reporting a colleague who had a sexual relationship with a patient.

Dr Maged Khalil was suspended in 2013 after it emerged he had engaged in sexual acts with a patient, during consultations billed to Medicare at a practice in Belconnen in Canberra’s south.

The woman later discussed the matter with Dr Khalil’s supervisor Dr Natem Al-Naser during six consultations.

In the consultations the pair discussed the relationship that had developed between the patient and Dr Khalil and the effect that relationship had on her health.

During the last consultation, at the patient’s request, she was referred to psychologist.

Dr Al-Naser has now been reprimanded for failing to inform the Medical Board of Australia about the misconduct.

ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal’s general president Linda Crebin ordered Dr Al-Naser be banned from supervising other doctors for two years.

“For a period of two years from the date of this order, the respondent is not to have any actual or perceived role as a supervisor,” she said.

Ms Crebin also ordered that Dr Al-Naser be trained in ethics and cultural awareness.

He will be required to have regular meetings with a mentor for 12 months.
