Melbourne Medical School welcomes new head

After an international recruitment process, Professor Stephen Smith, the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences announced the appointment of Professor Geoff McColl as the Head of the Melbourne Medical School. Professor McColl will succeed Professor James Best who was appointed Dean of the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in 2014.

A former graduate of the Melbourne Medical School, Professor McColl holds the Chair of Medical Education and Training and is Director of the Medical Education Unit in the Melbourne Medical School.

Since 2008 he has led the development and implementation of the new Melbourne MD which graduated its first cohort of students in December of 2014. He has previously held the positions of Deputy Dean and Senior Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching) in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and Clinical Dean of the Royal Melbourne Hospital/Western Hospital Clinical School.

After internship and residency at the Austin and Repatriation General Hospitals he completed advanced training in rheumatology attaining his Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 1992.
