Boston Scientific is pushing the life expectancy limits of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) by releasing its Extended Longevity (EL) line of such devices. The DYNAGEN EL and INOGEN EL ICDs are expected to last for about 12 years, potentially double the lifetime of similar competing devices. The implants feature EnduraLife technology that uses novel chemical techniques to manufacture batteries that last longer.
Boston Sci also touts the devices’ smaller and thinner shape that should help to make implantation a tad easier and promote long term patient comfort.

The first implantation of an EL ICD has already been successfully performed at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).
