EL-ICDBoston Scientific is pushing the life expectancy limits of implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) by releasing its Extended Longevity (EL) line of such devices. The DYNAGEN EL and INOGEN EL ICDs are expected to last for about 12 years, potentially double the lifetime of similar competing devices. The implants feature EnduraLife technology that uses novel chemical techniques to manufacture batteries that last longer.

Boston Sci also touts the devices’ smaller and thinner shape that should help to make implantation a tad easier and promote long term patient comfort.

“Boston Scientific is proud to build upon the world’s most innovative ICD technology with the world’s smallest ICD, the world’s longest-lasting ICD and the world’s only subcutaneous ICD,” said Joe Fitzgerald, executive vice president and president, Rhythm Management. “By providing a device with greater battery capacity, physicians are now able to offer patients a longer lasting device and increased peace of mind, while administrators and payors have new options to more effectively manage healthcare costs and minimize unexpected complications.”

The first implantation of an EL ICD has already been successfully performed at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).
