Ethicon, a division of J&J, just unveiled the new ECHELON FLEX Powered Vascular Stapler at the The Society of Thoracic Surgeons 51st Annual Meeting in San Diego. The device has a curved, blunt anvil and a shaft that are 26% narrower than the main competition, namely Covidien’s Endo GIA Curved Tip Reload with Tri-Staple Technology. This is the narrowest anvil available on the market and should help with access and visualization during critical vessel transections. It also features 11 percent more articulation to help get into tight spots.
The device can be used during thoracic surgeries and for video-assisted thoracoscopic lobectomies. The company considerably reduced tip movement during the stapling process, helping to place staples accurately without damaging nearby tissue.
“Thoracic surgery is performed in restricted narrow spaces around delicate vascular anatomy … This new powered thin lower profile stapler is designed to improve access, visibility and stability and delivers a secure, hemostatic staple line. It is a significant advance that may help surgeons avoid potential complications and improve patient outcomes,” said Robert J. Cerfolio, MD, MBA, FACS, FCCP Professor, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Section Chief of Thoracic Surgery at The University of Alabama at Birmingham.
