IMMUNISATION clinics are set to be axed in an area that has one of the worst vaccination rates in Queensland.

Gold Coast Council wants to stop community immunisation despite the region falling well short of the Queensland Health goal of 95 per cent vaccination coverage.

A subcommittee has recommended the community clinic immunisation stop because it is costing council $160,000 a year with a shortfall in funding and small take-up.

Health professionals have hit out at the proposal, saying axing the clinics would be a major blow to the immunisation program.

In other news, it’s going to be a stinking hot Australia Day, temperatures tipped to exceed 35C in the southeast and 40C plus out west and in the north.
