The Queensland government and Labor have found another issue to agree on – medicinal use of marijuana.
The New South Wales government has agreed to fund trials on the use of medicinal cannabis to judge its effectiveness on a range of debilitating illnesses, including treating children with epilepsy and the terminally ill.
The new Victorian Labor government campaigned on legalising its use for people with terminal or life-threatening conditions by the end of the year.
But to date, Queensland has committed to nothing.
Previously, Premier Campbell Newman has said he was “sympathetic” to the issue, but wanted to wait on the outcome of the NSW trial.
On Wednesday, Opposition Leader Annastacia Palaszczuk said Labor had the same position.
“I understand there is a trial happening at the moment in New South Wales, I think we should have a look at how that trial eventuates and I am happy to give that due consideration once we have seen the outcomes of the views of that trial,” she said.
“I think it is the process at the moment, so let’s see the outcomes of that trial and if we need to … my focus here is to see the outcome of the NSW trial in the first instance.”
