Calvary Hospital has hired a new chief financial officer and a new chief executive.

Former Australian National University chief financial officer David Sturgiss will start as the hospital’s new chief financial officer next month, while interim chief executive Karen Edwards has been named as Calvary Health Care Bruce and Calvary Bruce Private Hospital’s new chief executive.

The appointments were announced to staff earlier this week.

The hospital lost its chief financial officer Wayne Armistead and chief executive Ray Dennis last year.

Ms Edwards was the chief executive of Calvary Health Care Kogarah for six years, while Mr Sturgiss was  chief financial officer of ANU for 15 years.

“David brings a wealth of experience, having seen ANU through the GFC (global financial crisis) and into a rapid period of growth and significant investment in infrastructure,” Brenda Ainsworth, national director public hospitals, said.

“Karen brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from her role at Kogarah and her experience in the NSW Health acute system. We wish her well in the challenges and opportunities she will face in this dynamic role.”

Calvary Hospital had a challenging year financially in 2013-14, posting an $11.3 million loss, revealed by The Canberra Times in November.

Financial documents revealed the hospital suffered a $12.3 million change of fortune from the previous year, when Calvary Health ACT reported a $1.1 million surplus.

At the time, Calvary national chief executive Mark Doran said Calvary had “absorbed the budget overrun” and services and care would not be affected.
