The best fitness tracker on the market just got even better
LAS VEGAS — Garmin might not be as well known as Fitbit or Jawbone in the fitness tracker category, but when it comes to usability for true fitness fanatics, its vívofit is widely considered the best on the market.
On the heels of that success, the company, which is more commonly associated with its GPS products, introduced on Monday the second iteration of its fitness tracker — appropriately called the vívofit 2 — as well as a string of accessories from Garmin and also high-end designer Jonathan Adler.
The vívofit 2 ($129) is reminiscent of the original in both look and functionality, but comes with a few new notable features that makes tracking easier, like a small bar on the display that shows activity progress. It’s also possible to set up audible alerts that nudge you to get up and move.
There’s a backlight option now too so you can see the screen in the dark and like the previous model, the vívofit 2 gets about a year of battery life on one charge.
The device works alongside other apps like RunKeeper and MyFitnessPal, as well as Garmin Connect, a free online fitness community that lets users track sleep patterns and trends, join online challenges, earn badges and so on.
However, the device doesn’t come with a heart-rate monitor, which is becoming increasingly popular in fitness wearables, so perhaps consumers will expect that to be built-into the vívofit 3. Not surprisingly though, the 2 does work with compatible heart-rate monitors.
The vívofit 2, which will start shipping in the first quarter, will be available in black, white, navy and pink at $129.
Three-pack colored accessory bands will also be sold for $29.99 in the following sets: neutral (black, slate and white), downtown (burgundy, slate and navy), active (red, blue and green), serenity (mint, cloud and lilac), and energy (canary, pink and violet). There will also be wristband options made of leather and stainless steel, the company said.
And as if we didn’t need more bands to choose from, Garmin’s Jonathan Adler pattern-printed accessory bands are another fashionable option for both the original vívofit and vívofit 2.
Three-pack Jonathan Adler accessories will be priced at $39.99 or bundled with the vívofit 2 for $139.99 — a very decent upgrade for just $10 more than what the hardware will cost.
