Nothing is more Australian than washing a feast down with an iced cold beer, and KFC wants to make this an in-store reality.

The fried chicken store has applied for a liquor license for a new concept store in Parramatta in Western Sydney, which will be known as KFC Urban, Fairfax Media reported. The store will be fitted out to appear “high end,” with wooden windows and exposed beams giving it a hip vibe, and plans to serve cider and beer to the cool crowd.

In a statement, KFC Australia said it hopes “to introduce a new KFC experience in Parramatta’s CBD in the near future, serving beer and cider as part of its menu.” The company is awaiting on approval from the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority.

But there are some people not getting into the drunken party spirit. Mike Daube, professor of health policy at Curtin University, told ABC News it was “absurd” for KFC to be selling alcohol.

“If they [KFC] want to run pubs, let them run pubs, but don’t market KFC in association with alcohol. We don’t need more normalisation of alcohol for kids,” he said.

The move by KFC follows McDonald’s opening a hipster cafe called The Corner in Camperdown, Sydney, late last year in an attempt to refresh their image and appeal to the trendy set.

KFC is planning to join a long line of fast food joints that have started selling alcohol with meals in Australia — such as Grill’d, Guzman y Gomez and Nandos. The more traditional fast food restaurants are imitating these successful new chains, who are gaining share in the fast food market with more varied food and drink options as well as design-focussed store fittings.
