The WA Government has been called on to reveal why the executive director of the new children’s hospital has left the role.
Greg Italiano finished in the role in October, but it is not yet clear whether he resigned or was asked to leave.
In 2012 Mr Italiano, who was then executive director at WA police, sparked a Corruption and Crime Commission investigation when he secretly accused Police Commissioner Karl O’Callaghan of misusing his corporate credit card.
A report released in August 2012 cleared Dr O’Callaghan of any wrongdoing but also revealed Mr Italiano had made the allegation.
Mr Italiano went on leave and later left the role.
He moved into the Department of Treasury for almost a year before being appointed to the Perth Children’s Hospital Project in September 2013.
Labor health spokesman Roger Cook said Mr Italiano’s departure was a sign that the project is in trouble.
“My understanding is that there’ve been high level crisis talks within the department about the Perth Children’s Hospital project,” he said.
“There is considerable conjecture that the hospital will now be delayed and not open in November 2015.
“It appears that with the departure of Mr Italiano that those predictions are now starting to come true.”
In a statement, Health Minister Kim Hames insisted the hospital was on track to open and accept patients in November next year.
Last week, former Country Health Service chief executive Ian Smith was appointed the chief executive of commissioning to oversee the final stage of completion for the hospital.
