State Cabinet will tomorrow consider a report on the stalled Royal Hobart Hospital redevelopment.

In May, the Government set up a “rescue taskforce” to suggest how to proceed with the project.

The Government has expressed a commitment to rebuilding the state’s major public hospital at its present site in central Hobart, but has since received a competing greenfield proposal.

Developer Dean Coleman submitted a plan that involves building a new hospital, hotel and war museum near Hobart’s Cenotaph.

State Growth Minister Matthew Groom would not be drawn on whether the Government was seriously considering the alternative proposal.

“I’m not going to pre-empt the outcome of the Government’s consideration of the report,” he said.

“What I will say is that the Government will ensure that we get the best possible outcomes for health.”

Opposition Leader Bryan Green said if the Government opted for Mr Coleman’s proposal he would welcome the change in policy.

“We wouldn’t openly criticise it in the beginning because looking at the proposal it is very good, and from the point of view of Tasmania’s economy it would make a huge difference,” he said.

“Obviously, it needs the Commonwealth to come on board with additional funds, but necessarily it is certainly worth looking at.

“It’s very well thought through.”

Health Minister Michael Ferguson said the Government would make its decision “soon”.
