Queensland MP Bruce Flegg will not be representing the LNP at the next state election.
Dr Flegg was defeated in a pre-selection battle for the seat of Moggill by challenger and former Australian Medical Association of Queensland president Dr Christian Rowan in Brisbane on Sunday afternoon.
It was the second pre-selection ballot held for Moggill.
Dr Flegg said he was disappointed with the result.
“These things happen in politics and life goes on. I accept the verdict of the pre-selection council. On at least this occasion I had the opportunity of running. It has been quite a turbulent time but … I wouldn’t change anything,” he said.
In October an LNP branch meeting in the Brisbane electorate voted against endorsing Dr Rowan as the new candidate with Queensland MPs at the time signing a letter supporting Dr Flegg.
The Premier, Deputy Premier, and Treasurer were among Dr Flegg’s supporters, but four colleagues – Lawrence Springborg, John-Paul Langbroek, Scott Emerson and Jann Stuckey – did not sign.
It came after the party executive initially ruled Dr Flegg ineligible to contest the seat.
