Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss in hospital

The Deputy Prime Minister, Warren Truss, has been admitted to hospital in Brisbane suffering colitis.

A spokesman for Mr Truss said The Nationals leader had been diagnosed with gastroenteritis and had been receiving care for at least 24 hours.

The spokesman said the illness was minor and that Mr Truss was making good progress.

Mr Truss was expected to remain in hospital over the weekend.

A statement released by his office said he thanked his colleagues for their support and he looked forward to resuming his duties as soon as possible.
