New Zealand police have secured a third suspicious package purporting to contain the Ebola virus, sent to high-profile locations in the country over the past 24 hours.

Police were called to the US embassy in Wellington this morning after an employee screening packages in the mailroom spotted a vial of liquid.

Similar packages had been sent to Parliament House and the New Zealand Herald newspaper, but were discovered yesterday.

The New Zealand army’s bomb disposal squad assisted police in dealing with the package found in the parliamentary mailroom.

A similar package sent to the newspaper office had included a plastic bottle of liquid.

All packages were accompanied by documents referencing the Ebola virus.

Police said the vials of liquid were being sent to Melbourne to be tested for the deadly virus, but pointed out most suspicious packages turned out to be benign.

They said the packages would also be tested for DNA and fingerprints.

The US embassy had remained open, with only the mailroom closed.
