Hope for regional incentives shake-up to mean more doctors for isolated communities

The newly appointed head of the Rural Doctors Association, who is currently working in WA’s Pilbara, says an overhaul of regional incentives will benefit north-west residents.

After a decade of lobbying, the Federal Government this week announced it was adjusting the way it classified ‘remote’ health services.

It will mean there are more incentives on offer for doctors to work in small and isolated communities, instead of larger regional centres.

Association president Dennis Pashen, who is currently doing locum work at Nicol Bay Hospital in Karratha, told the Morning Show, it was good news for northern WA.

“It’s got some benefits for the hospital but it’s also got benefits for general practice in the area,” he said.

“It’ll allow them to bring in registrars and train them here.”
