It seems like nearly every week we see multiple new health and fitness trackers hitting the market. Each has some unique features intended for specific applications, whether you’re running, swimming, tracking food intake, or watching your body temperature. Yet, nearly all of them are intended for the mass market, and finding a tracker for uses and activities that are rare and unique is often impossible. What if you’re a rower and want to track your strokes or a climber looking to gauge how your arms spread the load when ascending El Capitan? You may have to build your own activity monitor, a seemingly daunting task for most that is now made easy thanks to the BITalino.
BITalino (r)evolution board
BITalino is a tookit based on the Arduino open-source hardware platform that allows you to snap together sensors of your choice and easily create a unique device for your specific needs. Last year Hugo Silva, one of the leaders of the project, wrote an article for Medgadget detailing the BITalino and forecasting some of the applications it will be used for. Now we’re happy to report that the team that developed the technology, having sold over 1200 units, is now raising money on Kickstarter to take BITalino to the next stage. They plan to make the boards much smaller and include Bluetooth Low Energy, improved signal quality, and other powerful features. Additional sensors are also planned, while existing components will be available as individual blocks to help you keep your device as tiny as possible. There are more features in the works, and we invite you to help with the project while creating your own unique hardware solutions.
