Last month, the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) published an article titled “Preparing for Critical Care Services to Patients with Ebola”. It proved timely; 6 days later, the country saw its first case of the disease. As The Lancet Respiratory Medicine went to press, the UK Department of Health was preparing to test its response to a simulated Ebola outbreak. The UK has agreed to deploy troops to Sierra Leone to assist with control efforts; they will join the 3000 or so troops President Barack Obama has pledged to west Africa.
