Confirmed: Newark Passengers Don’t Have Ebola
The sick passenger and his daughter pulled off a plane in Newark International Airport do not have Ebola, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed Saturday evening.
The passenger began vomiting on United Flight 998 from Brussels, Belgium, a flight that included passengers connecting from Liberia. The plane was sealed upon landing.
“Full medical evaluation revealed no evidence or concern for Ebola,” according a CDC statement obtained by Mashable. The passenger and his daughter were released from a local hospital feeling well, the statement says.
CDC officials had rushed to meet the plane after it made an emergency landing when the 35-year-old male passenger vomited.
The passenger and his daughter, whom the New York Post described as about 10 years old, were evacuated by CDC officials in full hazmat gear and treated at University Hospital in Newark, according to ABC.
The remaining passengers were allowed to deplane, a Port Authority spokesperson said.
Even if the man had had Ebola, the passengers wouldn’t necessarily have been at risk. As the CDC has been at pains to point out, Ebola is only spread through direct contact with bodily fluids, rather than through the air.
