ANNASTACIA Palaszczuk has renewed the Opposition’s call for a public inquiry into the Rockhampton Hospital. Visiting the city on Wednesday, the Opposition Leader took aim at Health Minister Lawrence Springborg, saying he was more focused on selling off hospital services than improving them. “What I am concerned about and some questions for the Health Minister Lawrence Springborg is why he has still not initiated a public inquiry into safety issues here at the Rockhampton Hospital,” she said. Ms Palaszczuk said that in May, the Vanguard Report exposed critical failures in clinical governance and patient safety management. Last month, the Opposition called for a public inquiry into 18 deaths at the hospital. Ms Palaszczuk said the Newman government had “a clear agenda” on privatisation. Medical imaging services were in the process of being privatised and Rockhampton MP Bill Byrne feared pathology and pharmacy services would be next in line. Health Minister Lawrence Springborg said devolved control by a CQ hospital board comprised of local people was delivering across-the-board improvements in health services to Central Queenslanders. “It is strange that the Labor Party, which contracted out radiology services at Brisbane’s QE2 and Logan hospitals, and radiation therapy at Cairns Hospital, would criticise contestability initiatives such as the new partnership on medical imaging that offers better service to all CQ residents,” he said.
