AUSTRALIANS are being urged to support a planned $20 billion Medical Research Future Fund in a new campaign to boost a commitment to research spending.
MEDICAL researchers, academics and business will come together in Melbourne on Tuesday to push what they say is a “nation-defining” proposal.
The federal government announced the fund in May’s budget. Money will be raised for the fund by the proposed GP co-payment and through savings in hospital and health spending. The campaign will say Australia has fallen behind on medical research, and invests only 64 per cent of the OECD average.
