MACKAY and the Whitsundays have been put on measles alert after an infected man attended a large wedding and buck party.
Mackay Hospital and Health Service spokesman Dr Stephen Donohue said the man had contact with extended family, friends and the community during the infectious period.
About 130 people attended the wedding at Cape Gloucester Beach Resort, Hydeaway Bay with the man when he was unwell. He also attended a bucks party held at Montes Reef Resort the night prior.
Health authorities have issued an alert for people who visited the following locations, and have notified GPs and hospitals in the area of the risk:
Friday 15 August: Montes Reef Resort Hydeaway Bay
Friday 15 August and Saturday 16 August: Cape Gloucester Beach Resort Hydeaway Bay
Sunday 17 August: La Tabella Trattoria, Airlie Beach (around 11am)
Tuesday 19 August: One Stop Centre Mackay (11am to 12.05pm)
Wednesday 20 August: MIMS Clinic Mackay Mater Hospital (morning)
“Anyone who was in these areas and who has not been vaccinated against measles or who has not had two doses of a measles vaccination should ring their GP immediately,’’ Dr Donohue said.
“It is important to make clear that these businesses have not been responsible for causing any risk to public health.
“We appreciate the co-operation we have received from management of these establishments in facilitating follow-up of staff and vaccination as required.”
Measles is a highly-infectious and serious illness that begins with a fever, cough, runny nose and sore eyes, followed by a spotty rash a few days later.
It is spread by tiny droplets in the air or contact with secretions from the nose or mouth.
People who suspect they may have measles should inform the practice before presenting to minimise the risk to other patients.
Health authorities say two doses of the measles vaccine provides long-term protection and recommends anyone born during or since 1996 should ensure they have had two shots.
