Quick thinking, compassion and ability to work in often chaotic situations are attributes needed to make a successful career as a paramedic..

Employees of Australian ambulance services are trained to respond to natural disasters and other emergencies as well as more routine calls when someone dials triple zero because a friend or relative has been injured or become suddenly ill.

Clare Beech of NSW Ambulance says the work has evolved considerably since the time when the main focus was transporting sick and injured individuals to hospital as quickly as possible.

She was one of the first generation of paramedics to begin working life with a tertiary degree and has added qualifications in intensive care, extended care and frontline management during her 12-year career.
