South Australia’s Opposition has launched an online campaign urging the Government to rule out the closure of Adelaide’s suburban hospitals. The Premier has said the petition was misdirected and called on the Liberals to instead join his campaign to fight federal cuts to the health budget. Taxpayer-funded ads have been railing against the $655 million federal budget cuts, which the Weatherill Government has warned could force the closure of a hospital. “We don’t want to have to close any hospital. But that’s the size of the task that’s necessary,” Mr Weatherill said. The Liberals’ health spokesman Stephen Wade said the Opposition was worried about the future of the Queen Elizabeth (QEH), Modbury and Repatriation General Hospitals. They have launched a series of online petitions urging the Government to rule out closing down hospital beds. Mr Wade said while the Liberals opposed the federal cuts, they believed the State Government was planning to cut deeper than necessary. “Let’s be clear: the state cuts to health are three times that of the federal cuts,” Mr Wade said. “Local communities should not have to pay for Labor’s mismanagement of the finances and health system of this state with the closure of their hospital. “The state Labor Party wants to use the federal cuts as a smoke screen for its own failure to manage the health system, its own failure to manage finances.” Mr Weatherill said the Opposition should campaign against the Commonwealth and not the State Government. “It is almost laughable to hear the Opposition talk about the future of our hospitals when their federal Liberal colleagues are out there making decisions that will lead to their closure,” he said
