The Australian Medical Association (AMA) says waiting times for surgery in south-west Victoria could fall if the State Government published better data.

The AMA has published its state election wish list and wants outpatient waiting times published, along with public hospital bed numbers.

More than 1,000 patients were on the elective surgery waiting list at Ballarat Hospital in the March quarter this year.

The AMA’s Dr Tony Bartone says the region’s patients are waiting too long.

“In category three, that’s the least urgent category, Ballarat Hospital patients are waiting 10 per cent or more than the median state average for elective surgery,” he said.

A statement from Health Minister David Davis says he has met the AMA and will announce relevant policies closer to the state election.

He says the State Government has already provided information on outpatient appointments and is investing billions of dollars to increase hospital capacities.
