The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service says most of its doctors have signed new employment contracts.

After several months of bitter negotiations, it says 187 of its 193 doctors have signed the new agreements.

It says two have resigned citing the contracts as a factor, one visiting medical officer has opted not to sign.

Chairman Bob Norman says he does not believe the protracted dispute has damaged the health service’s relationship with staff in the long-term.

“As with a lot of industrial disputes there is a certain amount of acrimony,” he said.

“Nonetheless, the parties involved have overcome that and the matter is I think to a large extent settled.

“I’m sure that there was a short-term problem but in the longer term we’re back to normal.

“I think people realised that ultimately this was an industrial dispute, there’s nothing to do with the actual delivery of health to patients.

“Things are back to normal and we’re continuing on.”
