WHEN you look at the numbers, Dayle Joekong’s efforts donating blood are extraordinary.

With a total of 262 donations over the course of 30 years, Mr Joekong has donated over 600 litres of plasma.

More importantly, the Australian Red Cross Blood Service estimates he has saved 763 lives.

The North Lakes resident said his first donation was in 1980, when he worked in the city and the nurse used to visit workplaces.

“I just thought it could be an easy thing to do to help people,” he said.

“After a while it just became a habit.”

Now Mr Joekong donates once a month.

This week the Blood Service is celebrating National Donor Week, recognising the efforts of donors like Mr Joekong.

Blood Service spokeswoman Bernadette Dias said Mr Joekong’s continued donations had helped new mothers, cancer patients and those undergoing emergency surgery.

“Every one of Mr Joekong’s donations help to save three lives, but his contribution has stretched so much further,” she said.

“A donation of blood has a ripple effect, from the person receiving the blood, right through to their entire family and their friends.”

More than 500,000 Australians will be recognised during the week for the 1.3 million donations made last year.

And as for those who haven’t donated yet through one fear or another?

Mr Joekong said there was nothing to be worried about.

“Just give it a go. The nurses are really helpful. It’s one thing you can do by yourself to help a lot.” he said.
