Senator Jacqui Lambie has used a speech in the Senate to push for an independent investigation into complaints against a Tasmanian doctor.

She has threatened to use parliamentary privilege to name the doctor, who she said was “alleged to be dangerously unsafe”.

The Palmer United Party (PUP) Senator demanded the doctor be stood down immediately pending the results of an independent investigation.

She told Parliament she met Federal Health Minister Peter Dutton yesterday and hoped the issue would be resolved quickly.

Senator Lambie added that if she was not satisfied with the Government’s response, she would act.

“I hope for a speedy resolution to this matter, and I ask that the Federal Health Minister give an assurance that this medical professional is stood aside pending the results of an independent investigation,” she said.

“But if these politicians fail to act quickly and suspend this doctor … I will use parliamentary privilege in this place and name this individual.”

Senator Lambie said claims of misconduct also extended to the agency that registers health practitioners, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

“There’s also the allegation from a very reliable source that the body normally tasked with disciplining and registering doctors – AHPRA – is also accused of dysfunctionality, incompetence and/or misconduct and there is compelling evidence to suggest that this is the case.”
